None of the younger Jurassic or Cretaceous species belong to Plesiosaurus. Review of the Early Jurassic species indicates that the only English species properly assigned to Plesiosaurus is P. dolichodeirus. Several other European Early Jurassic species have been assigned to new : Reptilia. D.S. The result of this break-up was the spawning of the Atlantic Ocean. However, at this time, the Atlantic Ocean was relatively narrow. Sea level was high. Plesiosauroidea is an extinct clade of carnivorous marine reptiles.

They have the snake-like longest neck to body ratio of any reptile. Plesiosauroids are known from the Jurassic and Cretaceous periods.

After their discovery, some plesiosauroids were said to have resembled "a snake threaded through the shell of a turtle", although they had no shell. Plesiosauroidea appeared at the Early Jurassic Class: Reptilia. The Plesiosaur Directory is for anyone interested in any aspect of plesiosaurs and their kin.

You will find information about the anatomy, classification and evolution of the group, along with data on specific genera and are also sections dedicated to plesiosaur palaeobiology or how the animals were in life. Key questions concern their swimming and diet. The Late Jurassic is the third epoch of the Jurassic period, and it spans the geologic time from ± to ± million years ago (Ma), which is preserved in Upper Jurassic strata.

There are very few fossil remains of Kimmerosaurus known. In fact, nothing has been found to show what Kimmerosaurus may have looked like below the neck, although the atlas and the axis are similar to those of the plesiosaur : Reptilia.
